NSFW tag for language is ridiculous. I vote to stop it. The FP and the rest of the kinjaverse have no qualms about dropping a “fuck”, or any other obscenity into a headline, let alone the content.

Two issues here. First, if you are going to mark something NSFW because of language then you shouldn’t include that language in the headline. Even pip bip acknowledged that with wink and a nod.
Second, language (among other things) is why kids can’t participate. There’s a lot of excellent information being shared here, but my kids won’t be a part of it until they are older simply because some people, even on the front page, can’t control their language. Sure, my kids have heard the words and yes, they know what they mean. That doesn’t mean that it is acceptable for them to use that language.
Participating in activities where foul language is commonplace makes people, especially kids, think that it is acceptable. Constant exposure even makes me want to drop the occasional f-bomb which is completely inappropriate in my workplace, while I’m volunteering, and at home. I spend a lot of time around kids in Scouts and coaching. The fastest way to lose the respect of the other parents is to unleash a torrent of foul words. I’ve seen more than one kid have to quit because his dad couldn’t keep his mouth in check.
There are extensions in Chrome that filter out most of the garbage and I use them. It makes for a much cleaner “kinjaverse”.

I chose the wrong post to comment about the issue. Pip bip’s title is perfect satire of it.
I’m just saying that putting a NSFW tag for black squiggly lines on the screen is dumb. And it’s NSFWork not NSFKids.
Related to that, and relevant to pip bip, most of the bertstrips are totally SFW but completely and utterly NSFK. I won’t let my kids near them.

Its so kids can come on and read title and not click to read article. If they do it’s on them.
If we cuss in title then that’s on us.
Kinja has no way to put up age barrier.
Maybe you would like it better in CL.

Children can come on and read website. No age controls. So make them actively click link before raping their virgin eyes.
That way Gawker doesn’t shut this down because of all the Nanny state parents who want to sue Gawker.
For the Virgin Eyeball thing.
No Doubt Lawyers were involved.

Fair point. Here are the rules for Oppo:
http://oppositelock.kinja.com/a-slightly-rev…
There are only two things mentioned regarding flagging something in the title. NSFW content and “political/sensitive” content. NSFW refers to images or video. Language is not addressed in the Oppo rules.

True but isn’t it better if we Police ourselves instead of have it become rules that are imposed from on high, from someone who doesn’t care?
They don’t have to continue to have Oppo up and running.
This usually is not a Money maker for the owners. If it becomes a problem management could tire of the hassle.
I guess you have to weigh your freedom to say what you want versus having Oppo up.
At least that is my viewpoint.

Now you’re making the Jalopnik links relevant. Bad words don’t constitute a problem for the Gawker management.
I’ll drag pip bip back into this (enjoy!). Bertstrips are far more offensive than any non-vocalized, written down, deemed bad by the FCC, curse words. Do you think he should stop posting them?

He can post but not in title. As I said Gawker doesn’t get anything from Oppo community. It’s a sub-blog that became its own after someone used it to get test drive using,”Press Creds”. You can Split hairs all you want. Your going for Letter of the Law, I’m going for Spirit of Law.

Doesn’t matter what we think. If it gets to be a problem it will be taken care of.
Or we can Police ourselves.
Just don’t put it in the Title. That way people have a choice of reading it or not.

What point are you trying to make about Oppo being its own sub-blog? Gawker still owns it just like it owns every other blog on the kinja platform. They benefit from Oppo because it brings eyeballs to their platform. Your argument that someone in management is going to shut down Oppo because of a curse word in a title is invalid. There is no hair splitting there.
What might happen? An Oppo mod might revoke your authorship privileges. But! Even then, there is nothing in the letter OR the spirit of the Oppo Law about putting icky words in the titles of posts.

We will disagree about this. That’s Ok.
NSFW= Stuff you wouldn’t say to your Grandmother or to kids.

Really? You talk to Gawker Management?
Or are you a mind reader?
Because I need to know what it would take to get Janet Jackson to date me.

I’ve enjoyed our back and forth today. ;-)
You’re right, we’ve got totally different definitions of NSFW.
I don’t need to talk to Gawker management, I’ve got proof in the form of posts from other Gawker owned blogs!
Now, Gawker did shut down some blogs recently. But they were paying people to write for them! They didn’t say, “damn, this is too much hassle.” They decided that it wasn’t worth paying people to maintain them.
Oppo is just another sub-blog like countless others on the platform. People write content on it for free! No amount of bad words in post titles are going to make it a target for shutting down.
As far as that date goes, you need to talk to Mr. Al Mana, but I don’t know if he’d be OK with that.
